The BHK (Baby hamster kidney) cells, sort of fibrillogenic cells, are isolated from the kidney of an uninfected golden hamster and are characterized by continuous passaging. They can be used for the proliferation and purification of a variety of viruses, such as foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV), encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), vesicular stomatitis virus (VSV), cerebral myocarditis virus, and eutherian virus. Currently, the BHK-21 cell line has been widely used in the production of FMD vaccine.
