Process Development for Vaccine Production

Vaccines are among the most cost-effective health interventions against pathogens and other infectious diseases, saving millions of lives annually while improving the quality of life for countless others. A vaccine typically contains an agent that resembles a disease-causing microorganism and is often made from weakened or killed forms of the microbe, its toxins, or one of its surface proteins. The manufacturing basics for vaccines are the steps necessary to make the agent noted in a manner that is safe, effective, and consistent over the life cycle of a vaccine.

Process Development for Vaccine Production

Growing global demand for vaccines, however, poses severe challenges for vaccine manufacturers. Creative Bioarray provides cell support services in the process of development for vaccine production to help our customers worldwide. We delivered rapid and accurate results to assist customers to accelerate their research.

Our Processing of Vaccines Production

  • Upstream. An antigen is generated in the upstream process that induces an immune response. It can be the pathogen itself which is generated from primary cells or continuous cell lines, or it can be an antigen generated from a recombinant protein that is generated by bacteria, yeast, or cell culture.
  • Downstream. The antigen is separated from impurities in the downstream process. This improves product safety and stability. Depending on the characteristics of the antigen and the impurity, purification technologies may be employed, chromatography, ultrafiltration, precipitation, enzyme digestion, or other processes.
  • Formulation. In combination with the vaccine adjuvant, all components that make up the final vaccine are combined during the formulation process are combined in the formulation process, to maximize the stability and prolong shelf life.

The Role of Cell Banks in Vaccine Manufacturing

  • The first step in manufacturing is the establishment of a "master seed." This is a collection of vialed cells that form the starting material for all future production. It is extensively characterized for performance, stability, and the absence of any adventitious agents.
  • For viral production, the master seed includes a "master cell bank" and a "master virus." From this bank, working cell banks are prepared, which are used as the routine starting culture for production lots.
  • All process is performed under cGMP conditions in compliance with national regulatory requirements. In addition, we perform a complete cell bank assay including identification, genetic stability, purity, viability, tumorigenicity testing, etc.
